Why Our Chemical SPF Is Made in the USA — and Still Best in Class

For this post, we're going to focus on our chemical sunscreens and how we create the safest FDA-approved chemical sunscreen — oxyybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene-free and photostable.

🇺🇸 Made in the USA. Bound by the FDA. Built to Protect.

At Soleil Toujours, we proudly manufacture our sunscreens in the United States. That means we’re subject to the strictest sunscreen regulations in the world — those of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Unlike in Europe, South Korea, or Japan — where sunscreens are regulated as cosmetics — the FDA classifies sunscreen as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug, making it far more difficult to approve new UV filters.

No new chemical UV filters have been approved in the U.S. since the 1990s. Sigh....

But at Soleil Toujours, we’ve created modern, high-performance sun protection within those limitations — and most importantly, with zero compromises.

🔬 What Makes Our FDA-Approved Chemical Sunscreen Different

We use only the most effective, photostable, and FDA-cleared chemical UV filters, including:

  • Avobenzone – the only FDA-approved UVA filter
  • Homosalate – a mild UVB filter that helps improve formula feel
  • Octisalate – boosts photostability and enhances spreadability

We do not use:

  • Octocrylene – linked to benzophenone formation and possible endocrine disruption
  • Oxybenzone or Octinoxate – flagged for reef harm and hormonal activity

🧪 No Octocrylene? No Problem. We Stabilize Naturally.

Octocrylene is often used to stabilize Avobenzone — but it may break down into benzophenone, a compound under investigation for toxicity and hormonal effects.

At Soleil Toujours, we stabilize without octocrylene using:

  • Red algae, vitamin C + E, and bisabolol for antioxidant support
  • Microencapsulation + smart layering for enhanced filter performance
  • Proprietary clean chemistry designed for all skin types and sensitive skin

🌍 Why Can’t We Use Filters from Europe or Asia?

Internationally, formulators can use advanced UV filters not yet approved in the U.S., such as:

  • Tinosorb S and M – photostable broad-spectrum filters
  • Uvinul A Plus & T 150 – cutting-edge UVA/UVB filters
  • Mexoryl SX / XL – patented by L’Oréal with excellent safety and efficacy

These filters are widely used in EU sunscreens — but they’re not FDA-approved, which means we cannot include them in U.S.-made formulations (yet).

⚖️ We’re Pushing for Progress — Here’s How

Soleil Toujours actively supports the push for more modern sunscreen regulations. We work alongside dermatologists, scientists, and clean SPF brands to:

  • Petition the FDA for review of globally accepted filters
  • Support legislation like the Sunscreen Innovation Act
  • Advocate for safer, more effective sun protection across all skin types
