Sun protection is a year-round commitment and one that is vital to a healthy lifestyle. How sun protection in winter differs from sun protection in summer:
Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun's UV light; the rays hit you twice further increasing your risk of skin cancer and premature aging. Due to the snow reflecting UV light onto your skin, it’s important to remember two overlooked spots for sun protection - underneath your nose and chin. Activities such as skiing and snowboarding require as much sunscreen as you would use at the beach because UV exposure increases 4-5% for every 1,000 feet above sea level. In addition to the increased UV exposure at higher altitudes, your eyes can also suffer significantly more than they would at the beach so proper eye protection is essential.
Best Practices for Winter Sun Protection:
- Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher while outdoors - mineral based is better for you and the environment
- Wear UV blocking wrap-a-around sunglasses for optimal eye protection (exposure to UV light almost triples in snow covered areas than exposure at the beach)
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours - sweating and wind exposure can wear away sunscreen quickly
- Apply and reapply chapstick with SPF to protect lips’ delicate skin
- Moisturize before and after sun exposure
