Natural products and an outdoor shower
Nothing screams summer more. Washing sand, sea water and oh, mineral sunscreen off al fresco is the ultimate. Who wouldn't want to cleanse under these circumstances? Using natural products is always the best way to go. Why? Because who wants chemical run-off in their backyard? More importantly, who wants potentially harmful chemicals penetrating their skin and flowing through their bodies? This brings to mind the heart of the Soleil Toujours philosophy - opt for natural products whenever possible.
The easiest way to think about it: your skin is your largest organ
What you put on it can penetrate the skin and potentially get into your bloodstream. Potentially toxic chemicals can stay in your system for long periods of time, even years, with potential harmful effects such as allergies, endocrine disruption, neurological damage and cancer to name a few. Not to scare you, really! Here's an info graphic we stumbled upon that makes it a little easier to understand the health risks of toxic chemicals in our bodies and especially in our children's bodies:
At Soleil Toujours, we AVOID the bad chemicals
Parabens, propylene glycol, SLS/SLES, synthetic colors or fragrances, phthalates, retinyl palmitate, triclosan, PEGs, urea. These are no good. The key sunscreen chemical we avoid in our formulas is oxybenzone
(benzphenone-3). Oxybenzone is one of the most common sunscreen chemicals (found in 56% of all sunscreens) and has been linked to hormone/endocrine disruption and potentially to cell damage that may lead to skin cancer. Also, the American Contact Dermatitis Society named oxybenzone as the Allergen of the Year for 2014. Not exactly natural products!
There are so many complicated chemical names to avoid, it's hard to keep track. We can all only do our best and most importantly, for those of us with children, we try even harder as their little bodies absorb so many more chemicals than us adults. 40-50% more to be exact. It's all a learning process and more skin care companies are offering better natural products. This means there are better alternatives to choose from. So this summer, if you're lucky enough to have an outdoor shower and the foliage around seems to be dying off, you may want to re-think your beauty product selections. Keep an eye on those labels. By being informed, you won't be living in fear of what you're putting on your skin. Happy summer all and shower on!
